This Spring, we again observe the nesting behavior of Athleticus directorus sp. With most rare birds, nesting behavior is directed towards mating and family building. In A. directorus, however, it seems to be more altruistic, directed towards attracting smaller, immature members of the species for the purpose of game playing, development, and - dare I say it - fun.
We disagree strongly with those who say the purpose is to develop fiercely competitive, squabbling behavior in the chicks. In fact, the main outcome is usually greater cooperation among the young, and higher levels of contentment among their siblings and parents. Indeed, the chicks often participate in building the nest.
Such a noble, hard working creature is A. directorus! Surely, we could all benefit from mimicking his behavior. Click HERE to watch (wmv)
