For Maps and Due Dates, scroll to bottom
Purpose
- Maps are key to understanding where we are and how our world is structured – both now and in the past.
- Students should have familiarity with the city, state, and country in which they live to promote healthy navigation.
- Students should have familiarity with the relative location of countries throughout the world to assist in understanding world events – both past and present.
How to fill out maps
- Locate a completed map of the area/geographical region assigned.
- Wall maps in classrooms (NOTE – be sure to check the date of the map)
- World Atlas (a small, but current atlas exists in student’s daily planners)
- Current encyclopedias and geography books
- Internet
- Maps may be filled out in pen or pencil.
- All locations on maps are to be written out completely and spelled correctly – NO ABBREVIATIONS ALLOWED. Misspelled locations will be counted incorrect. Remember, all geographic locations with a name are proper nouns – they must have the first letter (of each word) capitalized.
- Print or cursive is allowed, however map locations MUST be written legibly and neatly.
- Coloring maps is encouraged – use colored pencils as they do not bleed and names can be read in the pencil.
- If a map location is too small to fit the name within the borders, the name can be written outside the boundaries with a straight line (ruler must be used) pointing to the specific location of the place.
- Maps are due at the beginning of the period on the date specified.
- If a map is lost, it can be reprinted from Mr. Martchenke’s web page – Maps Page. Click on the name of the map and then you will be able to download the specific map.
- When maps are returned, they should be kept in the front of the Social Studies section of a student’s binder. All maps need to be kept for the entire year.
Map quizzes
- In order to pass any map quiz (with the exception of the 50 States test), a 75% must be achieved. Students will retake map quizzes until a 75% or better is attained.
- Map quizzes will be location only, not spelling (with the exception of the 50 States test – 7 th grade).
- Students will have time to practice in class for quizzes.
- Students must achieve a 100% on the 50 States (7 th grade) and on the continents tests.
- All maps taken during the year will appear on the final exam. A 75% on the map portion of the exam is necessary to pass.
Studying Hints
- Print a blank map from the Internet (Mr. Martchenke’s web page, University of Alabama, and other sites) and practice locating countries without looking at a completed map.
- Map Games – there are a few online resources for working on map locations
- Have a partner (classmate or family member) test you using a blank map.
- Keep completed and blank maps at the front of the Social Studies section of the student’s binder. This will help in locating the map and easy reference throughout the year.
- Be sure to be in class as locating countries will be practiced periodically.
